Walk into any hospital, construction site, or school in South Africa. Ask the manager how they coordinate a crisis.
They won't say "Microsoft Teams." They won't say "Slack."
They will pull out their phone and show you a WhatsApp group named "Ops Alpha," "Grade 4 Parents," or "Security Response."
This is the Shadow Network. It is efficient. It is fast. And it is entirely un-auditable.
The Three Risks
- Data Leakage: When an employee leaves, they are removed from Slack by IT. But they stay in the WhatsApp group. They keep the client list. They keep the photos.
- POPIA Violation: Adding a client to a group without consent exposes their phone number to everyone else in that group. That is a privacy breach.
- Bullying & Reputation: Unmoderated chats are a breeding ground for toxic behavior. Without an "Admin Record," HR cannot investigate.
You Can't Ban It
Many CIOs try to ban WhatsApp. "Use the official app!" they demand.
It never works. Shadow IT wins because it follows the path of least resistance. People use WhatsApp because it is low-data, works on cheap phones, and everyone already knows how to use it.
